N I C K + A S H L E Y
I had the special privilege of documenting my dear friend Nick marrying his best friend in a grove of cedars last May. Nick is one of my only high school friends that I’ve stayed in touch with. We went through all of our teenage angst and questioning together in which we completely turned our worldview upside down and inside out; it was a terrifying and exciting time. Needless to say, it was deeply bonding. We’ve stayed in touch ever since. When I was living at a Monastic farm up in the San Juan Islands with limited internet and phone service, Nick and I exchanged a few letters. In one, he wrote these heart-warming words about his best friend who he’d shared “more than friends” feelings with for some time now:
“Ashley and I are dating now, which has easily been the best part of the last four months. I won’t gross you out with the details like Jonathan talking about his Jeep; I just want to say that she is wonderful, my best friend, and I love her. Her presence has been one of the greatest highlights of these last four years, and I look to the future with anticipation.”
Two years later and they were saying “I do!” And let me tell you, these two are so in love and in sync. Photographing them was the easiest ever because of their unavoidable giddiness. During one moment, I caught them tearing up together and exclaimed how sweet it was. They replied that they were actually crying because they were sad thinking about leaving their dog, Luna, behind while on their honeymoon. HEARTS OF GOLD.
I spent part of my high school years in Gresham and I never thought much of it. Little did I know that there was a gorgeous wedding venue property nestled behind the Walmart near my parent’s house. The lush greenery gave us great portrait backdrops and it was beautiful watching Ashley walk down the aisle lined with tall cedar trees. The indoor venue is a charming and rustic wood-walled lodge type facility. There are no windows, but its glowing low light against the warm wood was romantic and cozy and the large and slick wood floors made for the perfect dance floor! Once they were convinced to stop partying, the happy pair were sent off with a joyous sparkler-lined fan club.
Congrats Mr. and Mrs. McElmurry!
